The tradition
In the early 19th century Manuel Garcia developed technologies and theories that led to the scientific understanding of voice we have today. From these advances emerged a period of teaching practice based on factual scientific understanding rather than trial and error methodology. Today teaching methods old and new are practiced side by side with varied success.

The Findings
MRI images show the manipulation of the sound modifiers by trained singers, illustrating how they maximise vocal projection by altering the resonance frequencies of their vocal tract.
Vocal fold behaviour has been shown to alter with training: closing and closed phase in a vocal fold cycle tends to increase to maximise the efficiency of phonation.
This picture shows larynx closed quotient against pitch plots for trained and untrained singers where each
plot is for a particular singer to show the difference with singing training/experience
The impact of the research
Staff involved in York Centre for Singing Science are disseminating theoretical findings through public engagement activities including workshops and presentations at singing teaching associations.
The results of the research into singing teaching and learning have led to new technologies being developed, bringing a new tool to the singing teaching studio.
